MGC Fraternity of the Year

April 19th, 2009 by Ryan Sung

Also on April 15, 2009, Roberty May, Alex Tao, Vernon Roque (MGC Representative), and myself attended the Multicultural Greek Council end of the year banquet at the Bungalow Club on Melrose.  The food was delicious and the venue was kind of exotic…hahaha

We were deeply honored when we received MGC FRATERNITY OF THE YEAR!!!  I know there was fierce competition, so we really appreciate this award.  In addition to the certificate distinguishing our award, we will also receive a Goblet like trophy where our fraternity name and 2009 will be inscribed.  Each year, the trophy will be passed on to the MGC Fraternity of the Year.  Of course, Zeta Phi Rho will be first on the trophy- I am sure we will have it for many years to come…

Vernon Roque also received an award: “Expert Sandwich Maker aka Most Breaded” for his efforts with Zeta Phi “Skid” Rho.  He will be holding a number of workshops detailing the proper art of making sandwiches.

USC Student Organization Volunteerism Award

April 19th, 2009 by Ryan Sung

What a year!

On April 15, 2009, Izachar, Vernon and I attended the annual Community Service Awards Banquet Dinner hosted by the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences as well as Government and Community Relations.  It was held at the Founders Room at the Galen Center.

It is a great honor receiving the USC Student Organization Volunteerism Award!  For our efforts with Zeta Phi “Skid” Rho and our mentorship in Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters, we received a plaque and a $250 check to the nonprofit organization of our choice.  We decided we will donate this money to Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters for their Bowl For Kids Sake event on April 25, 2009.  During these economic times, we hope this money will contribute to sustaining programming and facilitating more matches.

Our USC  Zeta Sisters are true warriors- TROJANS!

On April 4, 2009, the Zeta Sister Chair (me) and 6 Zeta Sisters: Samantha Chan, Chanel Honda, Kristin Jung, Christina Manh, Tina Sun, & Rachel Yuan went down to UCSB for the annual Zeta Sis Games to show who’s boss.

There were a number of games including tug-o-war, balloon popping, dodgeball, and an intricate relay race.  We were victorious dodgeball champions!!  Overall, we placed 2ND amongst all the chapters.

I commend our Zeta Sisters for giving their all; while other teams subbed Zeta Sisters, ours played just about every game.

Like I always say, USC Zeta Sisters are like NO OTHER!

Zeta Sister Dessert Social

March 25th, 2009 by Justin Ng

Hope everyone had a safe, relaxing and fun spring break! On behalf of the brothers of Zeta Phi Rho Gamma Chapter I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who attended the dessert social at the Greenhouse on March 11th. Collectively we brought together a delightful variety of desserts, ranging from classic chocolate chip cookies to unconventional delicacies like homemade red velvet cake. The desserts combined with the light conversation and laughter that followed helped alleviate a lot of the midterm season stress many bros and sisses were experiencing.

However, amidst the lighthearted fun of the social, I wish to address the upsetting event that occurred near the beginning of the social. Four criminals were involved in the shooting of an LAPD officer. By the end of the night, all four criminals had been apprehended. Given that the Greenhouse was just blocks away from the scene of the crime, we saw the LAPD drive in searching for the suspects before we even knew what was going on. USC DPS did a good job of notifying students and members of the community, utilizing both texts and email to get the word out. I want to assure you all that the attendees of the social all stayed inside and were safe and sound, transforming otherwise wasted time into valuable bonding time over the critically acclaimed film, “Slumdog Millionaire.”

For those of you who weren’t able to make it to the social, don’t worry. We have a slew of events in the coming weeks including family-specific events, so stay posted! Spring break may be over, but the socializing isn’t. Stay safe everyone!

Zeta Phi Rho is a brotherhood that extracts the full potential of its members and molds them into the leaders you see today. Leaders who are ready to contribute to society and make a difference. Leaders who remember those who have inspired them, and in turn will inspire others. Leaders who are known as the Distinguished Gentlemen of Zeta Phi Rho. Zeta Phi Rho is a young fraternity rapidly expanding in every direction - physically, structurally, strategically, culturally, philanthropically. We break fraternity stereotypes. Our 8 chapters in southern California, governed by our Distinguished Council, provide a huge network of brothers in constant communication with each other. We are a diverse group of brothers driven by our philosophy - commitment to character, leadership, academics, and the community.

UNFORGETTABLE: CASA’S 10th Annual Culture Show

February 10th, 2009 by Justin Ng

Mark your calendars now because one of the greatest undertakings of the new year is in production. On March 7th, 2009, USC Chinese American Student Association (CASA) will host its 10th Annual Culture Show, a heart-wrenching, adrenaline-pumping musical held in the picturesque Bovard Auditorium. You’ll find yourself humming along to these entirely student-produced, show-stopping tunes. The performance will only be four hours long, but the memories the show will give you will be UNFORGETTABLE.

But I bet you’re probably wondering what this show is actually about. Sure it’s about Chinese culture, but what does that mean? Why should I be interested? Well here’s a quick synopsis of the musical:

“Set in the year 1936, ‘Unforgettable’ is a MUSICAL about two Chinese Americans who return to the city of their birth in pre-World War II China. A world apart from the rest of China, Shanghai was known as the Paris of the East- a cosmopolitan city full of jazz bars, brothels, and dangerous street gangs… all in the midst of an impending invasion by the Imperial Japanese Army.

As Jackson Chang and Faye Ouyang return home from America, they find themselves searching for their troubled nation’s true identity… as well as their own.”

The show is free to all USC students with valid ID. Bros from other chapters, e-mail me for group rates. All others will be charged an entrance fee of $7. The show will take place from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm.

Many members of our Zeta family have contributed significantly to the creation of this show, including:

Stephanie Au-Yeung, Jamie Laureola, Vivien Lee, Justin Ng (yours truly),Erica Pu, Joanne Seto, Julia Reyes

As if this were not already enough reason to go, I can assure you that it will be a night to remember. The show has been in production for over a year and the cast practices religiously. After months of fundraising, the show’s production values are astonishingly high. I recently had the opportunity to preview some of the performances at the CASA Culture Show fundraising dinner and was blown away. Virtually none of these performers are majoring in music or the arts and yet their talent and professionalism match actual majors. Seeing is believing, as cheesy as it may be. Invite everyone you know!

In summary,

WHO - CASA with guest performances from Chaotic 3, Traditional Chinese Dance, Vanguards Crew, USC Fly Girls, and more.

WHAT - Unforgettable, CASA’s 10th Annual Culture Show

WHEN - Saturday, March 7, 2009
